With deep sadness, we share the loss of one of Lithuania’s most beloved voices of nature, whose work inspired generations to discover and love the natural world.

Naturalist, author and photographer, Selemonas Paltanavičius devoted his life to observing, understanding and sharing the wonders of nature. Through his books, photographs, articles and radio programmes, he brought the natural world closer to people of all ages and encouraged a deeper appreciation for biodiversity and its protection.

He had a rare gift for making complex subjects accessible and memorable. Paltanavičius wrote more than 100 books, most of them for children, introducing generations of young readers to the animals, birds and plants around them. His books combined knowledge and storytelling with a genuine sense of wonder, becoming an important part of Lithuanian children’s literature.

He also shared his knowledge through thousands of articles and radio programmes, becoming a familiar and trusted voice for generations of listeners. His contribution to literature, nature education and environmental awareness was recognised with numerous awards, including the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Grand Duke Gediminas of Lithuania, the IBBY Prize for the Best Non-fiction Book of the Year, and the Pranas Mašiotas Prize for the best book for children and young adults.

His legacy lives on in the works he left behind and in the many people he inspired to look more closely at the natural world.

At Book Smugglers Agency, we were proud to introduce some of his books to Latvian, Estonian and Finnish readers, including THE BEST TAIL EVER (orig. PATI GERIAUSIA UODEGA), SCOOTER (orig. PASPIRTUKAS), A LITTLE SQUIRREL’S YEAR (orig. VOVERIUKO METAI), TUKAS IS LEFT ALONE (orig. TUKAS LIEKA VIENAS) and others.

We are grateful to have played a small part in carrying his work beyond Lithuania, and we will continue to bring his books to the world.
